1. Who we are

Makhi is a private residential estate marketplace operated by Makhi (Pty) Ltd, a South African company. Our platform allows residents of registered estates and complexes to buy, sell, and offer services within their community.

For the purposes of POPIA, Makhi acts as the Responsible Party for personal information collected through the Makhi mobile application and website.

2. Information we collect

Information you provide directly

• Full name, email address, and phone number when you register
• Unit number and estate association for verification purposes
• Identity document or lease agreement uploaded for residency verification
• Profile photo (optional)
• Listing content including titles, descriptions, photos, and prices
• Messages sent between residents through the in-app chat
• Support queries and feedback submitted to us

Information collected automatically

• Device type and operating system
• App usage data including screens visited and features used
• Crash reports and error logs
• Date and time of account activity

Information we do not collect

• Payment card or banking details (all transactions are conducted directly between residents)
• Precise GPS location
• Contacts, photos, or other device data beyond what you explicitly share

3. How we use your information

We use your personal information to:

• Create and manage your Makhi account
• Verify your residency within a registered estate
• Display your listings to other verified residents of your estate
• Facilitate messaging between buyers and sellers
• Allow estate managers to moderate listings and manage residents
• Send transactional notifications about your account or listings
• Investigate reports of prohibited content or behaviour
• Improve the app and troubleshoot technical issues
• Comply with our legal obligations under South African law

We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not share it with advertisers.

4. How we share your information

We share your information only in the following circumstances:

Within your estate community

Your name, unit number, and listing content are visible to other verified residents of your estate. Your contact details are not shared unless you choose to include them in a listing.

With your estate manager

Estate managers on the Makhi admin dashboard can view resident profiles, uploaded verification documents, and listings for moderation purposes. This is a core part of the closed-community model.

Service providers

We use Supabase (database and file storage) and Expo (app delivery) as technical service providers. These providers process data on our behalf and are contractually required to keep it secure.

Legal requirements

We may disclose information if required by South African law, court order, or to protect the safety of our users or the public.

We never

• Sell your personal information to third parties
• Share your information with advertisers
• Transfer your data outside South Africa without adequate safeguards

5. Data retention

We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your profile is deactivated and your personal details are removed from public view. Certain data may be retained for a limited period for legal compliance or dispute resolution purposes.

You can request full deletion of your data by contacting us at info@makhi-sa.co.za or by using the data export and account deletion features within the app.

6. Your rights under POPIA

As a data subject under the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013, you have the right to:

• Access: request a copy of the personal information we hold about you
• Correction: request that we correct inaccurate or incomplete information
• Deletion: request that we delete your personal information, subject to legal retention obligations
• Objection: object to the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances
• Data portability: export your data using the in-app export feature
• Complaint: lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa

7. Security

We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your personal information, including:

• Encrypted data storage and transmission (TLS)
• Row-level security policies restricting data access to authorised users only
• Estate-scoped data isolation: residents can only see data within their own estate
• Regular security reviews

No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure. If you become aware of a security issue, please contact us immediately at info@makhi-sa.co.za.

8. Children

Makhi is not intended for use by persons under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from minors. If you believe a minor has created an account, please contact us and we will remove the account promptly.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and notify users through the app. Continued use of Makhi after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
